Firefly Visual Companion, volumes 1 and 2

Volume 1: This has to be the shiniest thing out there for the Firefly fan, aside from the obvious choices of the DVD set and the soundtrack. The glossy, full-color book is a must-have, with a long interview with Joss, episode scripts, character profiles, and detailed looks at key props. There is so much to love about this book. Let’s start with the photos: somehow Titan books got their hands on some absolutely adorable promo pictures never seen before of the Big Damn Heroes. As a Mal fan, I have to give special thanks for the huge, gorgeous Mal pics (and a really lovable Wash one, too). Sprinkled throughout the book, they’re a joy to behold.

The beloved props get their due, with details and crisp photos of Mal’s gun, holster, and browncoat, as well as the Independant military patch. Sprinkled throughout the book are quotes from the cast members and various people involved in the making of Firefly.

The character profiles do readers the respect of knowing that we are deeply familar with the basics of who these people are, and delve a little deeper with interviews with the actors that play them. Each character profile has a full-page color photo of the character on the facing page; it’s an impressive presentation.

The scripts for the first half of the episodes are presented with photos sprinkled throughout, in a remarkably readable fashion. They, along with Joss’s interview, form the “meat” of the book. Joss talks in detail about various aspects of Firefly until in true cliff-hanger style, the interview is halted for continuation in volume 2. It’s shiny. And pretty. And inexpensive ($15.00 through amazon.com). Buy it!

Volume 2: Just as worthy as the first, the second volume contains the remainder of the scripts, more wonderful photos, and of course the rest of the interview with Joss Whedon. It’s not really appropraite to review the two seperately - they kinda go together, like Mal and Inara. Wait. Maybe that wasn’t the best analogy. But you get the idea :D
