Firefly and Serenity

Finding Serenity

November 11th, 2007 Posted in Firefly Merchandise, Serenity Books and Media

Not really official merchandise, but professionally published, this is a collection of essays relating to Firefly, written by various authors. There are several chapters that are worth the purchase price on their own. There is an utterly hilarious series of “letters” from Jubal Early, the head of Fox, to Joss Whedon that have to be some of the funniest things I’ve ever read. I also love the chapter where Jewel talks about her favorite moments from the show, and the Chinese translations are great to have in print. Most of the rest of the essays seem a little forced and overly intelllectual to me, as though written for an A in college English; the writing is almost too good. You will enjoy them if you have to read everything ever printed about Firefly (that would be me!), or if you agree with the author’s viewpoint. If you hang out on message boards long enough, you will find that Firefly and the characters within it represent vastly different things to different people, and we relate to the characters for different reasons. Given that, you may find that your view of any given concept in Firefly (from reavers to freedom) may clash with the writer’s.
