Not really official merchandise, but professionally published, this is a collection of essays relating to Firefly, written by various authors. There are several chapters that are worth the purchase price on their own. There is an utterly hilarious series of “letters” from Jubal Early, the head of Fox, to Joss Whedon that have to be some of the funniest things I’ve ever read. I also love the chapter where Jewel talks about her favorite moments from the show, and the Chinese translations are great to have in print. Most of the rest of the essays seem a little forced and overly intelllectual to me, as though written for an A in college English; the writing is almost too good. You will enjoy them if you have to read everything ever printed about Firefly (that would be me!), or if you agree with the author’s viewpoint. If you hang out on message boards long enough, you will find that Firefly and the characters within it represent vastly different things to different people, and we relate to the characters for different reasons. Given that, you may find that your view of any given concept in Firefly (from reavers to freedom) may clash with the writer’s.

Volume 1: This has to be the shiniest thing out there for the Firefly fan, aside from the obvious choices of the DVD set and the soundtrack. The glossy, full-color book is a must-have, with a long interview with Joss, episode scripts, character profiles, and detailed looks at key props. There is so much to love about this book. Let’s start with the photos: somehow Titan books got their hands on some absolutely adorable promo pictures never seen before of the Big Damn Heroes. As a Mal fan, I have to give special thanks for the huge, gorgeous Mal pics (and a really lovable Wash one, too). Sprinkled throughout the book, they’re a joy to behold.

The beloved props get their due, with details and crisp photos of Mal’s gun, holster, and browncoat, as well as the Independant military patch. Sprinkled throughout the book are quotes from the cast members and various people involved in the making of Firefly.

The character profiles do readers the respect of knowing that we are deeply familar with the basics of who these people are, and delve a little deeper with interviews with the actors that play them. Each character profile has a full-page color photo of the character on the facing page; it’s an impressive presentation.

The scripts for the first half of the episodes are presented with photos sprinkled throughout, in a remarkably readable fashion. They, along with Joss’s interview, form the “meat” of the book. Joss talks in detail about various aspects of Firefly until in true cliff-hanger style, the interview is halted for continuation in volume 2. It’s shiny. And pretty. And inexpensive ($15.00 through amazon.com). Buy it!

Volume 2: Just as worthy as the first, the second volume contains the remainder of the scripts, more wonderful photos, and of course the rest of the interview with Joss Whedon. It’s not really appropraite to review the two seperately – they kinda go together, like Mal and Inara. Wait. Maybe that wasn’t the best analogy. But you get the idea

Solid gold on one itty-bitty CD! I’ve been in love with the Firefly soundtrack ever since I first started watching the series, and this CD is wonderful. It stands on its own very well and has a fantastic variety of tracks very well arranged so that it never gets boring. There is some incredibly beautiful and moving music on this CD. Dissapointment: The Hero of Canton and the end credits theme are not included. I own a fair number of soundtracks, and I would put this in my top 5 if not higher. Nice liner notes too (with a lovely black-and-white pic of Mal).

I once had the pleasure to meet Firefly composer Greg Edmonson, and I have to say his love for the show is as evident in person as in is reflected in the music he created for it. As with so many aspects of Firefly, the creation of the soundtrack was a labor of love.

The Firefly trading cards are in a word, lovely. I get the sense that whoever designed them and wrote the text was a fan of the show, because the scenes and the characters seem so lovingly portrayed. There is a base set of 72 cards which can be obtained for around ten dollars shipped on ebay; this comprises the bulk of the collection and is a great purchase for the Firefly fan on a budget. They are lavishly decorated with key scenes from the series along with tidbits of information about the episodes and characters. The 72-card “base set” includes cards with profiles of each of the characters, ones with images and notes from behind the scenes of Firefly, several cards devoted to each episode of the series with key scenes, memorable quotes and other tidbits, and more. These make up the bulk of the set and they are truly lovely in design, content, and presentation.

Moving beyond the base set, we have autograph cards for many of the cast members. Each card bears an original, authentic signature, and these are actually a great way to collect genuine cast autographs (which are difficult to come by – most autographed items sold on ebay are forged). They’ll cost you about $30-100.00 depending on the cast member. Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, Ron Glass, Sean Maher, Adam Baldwin, Gregg Henry, Christina Hendricks, Jonathan Woodward, and Michael Fairman all have signed autograph cards in the series. Notably missing are Alan Tudyk, Summer Glau, and Mark Shepherd. Alan Tudyk and Summer Glau did however sign autograph cards for the Serenity series.

There are some other special cards, which vary in scarcity and price:

The “Partners” series of three cards: Mal and Inara, Zoe and Wash, and Simon and Kaylee.
The Battle of Serenity series of six cards: These have pretty foil accents and portray, you guessed it, the battle of Serenity.
The Firefly Forever “puzzle” series: Nine shiny foil cards which, when arranged in a card-holder page, form a complete picture of the crew. There are also some rare “uncut” sheets available, where the sheet has not been cut into individual cards.
The “Outlaws” card: a rare but not otherwise terribly exceptional card, with Mal, Jayne, and Zoe on the front.

Finally, there’s a lovely padded binder, retail price $20.00, to put them all in. That’s a lot of money to pay for a 3-ring binder, but…it’s a mighty enticing binder. Full-color pictures on the front, side, and back, padding to make it feel all special, and the fact that it’s one of those rare official Firefly items make this a tempting purchase.
