A while back I discovered a very cool site called etsy.com – an online site where people can sell handmade goods. That led to another discovery, a girl who sells really neat t-shirts under the name Raygun Robyn. They caught my fancy, and I immediately wanted a Firefly design from her. A few emails later, she produced an awesome Serenity t-shirt for me. I bought it, got it….and promptly ordered another.

Not only are the shirts fashionable, abstract, and very browncoatish looking, they are very soft and comfortable. Her women’s shirts are flattering and have just the right amount of stretch – they rock! Here is a listing for the Serenity design – if it’s listed as sold out by the time you click on it, just visit her store and look for the “custom spaceship” design.

It’s been a year or so since the hack, and to make a long story short I don’t think the site I was using to sell my jewelry will ever be fully functional again. The good news is that I have a second, mainstream jewelry site that does work, and I’ve finally decided to move my browncoat goodies over there. The site is Distinction Jewelry and it has a small but growing selection of Firefly pretties plus Stargate Atlantis and SG-1 jewelry….plus lots of non-geek stuff!

If you currently link to my jewelry shop, thank you! Very, very much. Would you be so kind as to point your links in the direction of Distinction Jewelry? I’d take it as a kindness…..

In the name of TMI, I’ll refrain from going into detail about this past year – let me just say that it’s been a rocky one from start to finish. And Mal thought he had it rough with that primary buffer panel! I am sorry for neglecting all of you….my customers, my sites, and my friends. It’s been survival this year. I hope this coming year will be a better one not only for me but for all of my fellow browncoats, and while we’re at it, the world.

“We’re still flying.” -Mal

“That’s not much.” – Simon

“It’s enough.” – Mal

Browncoats are known for doing not only the impossible, but also the difficult and the ambitious. Thus it shouldn’t surprise me that the documentary DVD written, directed, and produced by a couple of talented fans outshines most documentaries with its professionalism and quality.

Appearances by Serenity cast Adam Baldwin (the host of the DVD), Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Jewel Staite, and Joss Whedon highlight the film. It’s worth buying not only for their inspiring words and humorous rememberences but for the thrilling inside look at the world of Firefly and Serenity fans and the thrill of seeing a beloved, cancelled TV show reborn as a major studio film.

Browse on over to Done The Impossible to check out the DVD, and order it online. You won’t regret it! Done The Impossible and its soundtrack are also available on amazon.com. A portion of all proceeds are donated to Equality Now.

Fans who’ve been about the ‘verse for a while will recall Browncoat Patches fondly as their supplier of patches, but unfortunately Bruce decided to close up shop a while back.

The next quality entry into this arena was www.outtotheblack.com with their Independent patch, the first released with the newly canon blue star (rather than the black). Prior to the release of the Firefly Visual Companion, fans had assumed the star to be black. The Out To The Black patch is excellent quality, and sold by one of the most respected sellers in the browncoat community.

Now there is a new kid on the block, www.PatchesNPins.com – a site that recently added Firefly and Serenity to their lineup of film and TV patches. They say they don’t actually produce the patches, they just distribute them.

They are the first company to provide screen-accurate Independent triangle patches, using the photos in the Firefly Visual Companion as reference. PatchesNPins offers three different versions of the patch, one for each variation in the Visual Companion. The average price of their patches is $7.00, which is a bit high compared to previous offerings (Out To The Black, for instance, offers their Independent patch for $5.00) but does include free shipping. They also sell a set of all three variants of the patch for $18.00.

In addition to the Independent patches, they offer up a Serenity logo (the Firefly based one, not the movie logo), several variations on the Alliance logo, both the red and the blue Alliance security shield patches, a medical patch, an Alliance troop patch, and of course Blue Sun.

I have a set of the three Independent patches here, and they are quite impressive – not quite as thick as some of the other fan-made patches I’ve seen, but the quality seems very good – they are precise in design and there are no loose or out of place threads. They are extremely accurate replicas of the patches shown in the Visual Companion, and I recommend snagging a set for your collection. When I ordered from their site I recieved my patches quickly and in great shape. This site could well end up being an excellent resource for collectors and costumers as they are continually adding new patches; I’d like to see a Serenity movie logo patch and Kaylee’s bear patch added to the selection.

Lyndono patches: There are significant differences between the Lyndono patch offered by Patches ‘n Pins and the one formerly sold by browncoatpatches.com – and I have to admit I don’t know which is the more accurate. The original Browncoat Patches patch is on the left; the Patches ‘n Pins version is on the right. It’s smaller and more vividly colored. Anyone? I should use this as an excuse to plug in my Serenity DVD, but I’m busy and lazy! I notice the colors on the Patches ‘n Pins version are similar to the Independent colors. Interesting……

Independent patches: Shown in the top row is the set of three screen-accurate Independent patches from Patches ‘n Pins; below is the one formerly sold by browncoatpatches.com. I wanted to include the blue-starred Independent patch sold by Out To The Black Outfitters in the photo, but I couldn’t find it! It’s very similar to the black-starred patch on the bottom, only it has the canon blue star. The star appears black on screen and was used until the Firefly Visual Companion revealed it to be blue. The patch was officially intended to be worn point down, but during the Firefly combat scenes Mal is shown wearing his with the point up – reportedly a mistake in the wardrobe department. However, a case can be made that whatever the original intent was, the point-up patch is canon, at least for Mal, because that’s how it actually appeared in the series. You choose!

Serenity Patches: Unfortunately, you can’t buy either of these right now. The patch on the left is a rare collectible; they were given to members of the old, official Serenity movie forum as rewards for collecting a certain number of points by completing tasks on the website. There were very few of these patches ever distributed; perhaps at some point someone will make a replica? It’s a very nice patch. The one on the right was produced and sold by the no longer operating Browncoat Patches.

There is a ‘verse of stuff out there for the avid Firefly and Serenity fan. Here, I’ve compiled some of the stores and items that are the most useful and interesting to me. This isn’t intended to be a comprehensive list; others out there have most certainly done a better job compiling this stuff online than me. This is just a list of some of my favorite merchandise, favorite sellers, and such.

Good comprehensive listing sites:

Fashionably Brown Fantastic resource for finding anything wearable that is Firefly or Serenity related, including costumes and jewelry. Nice guides broken down by character.

Serenity Stuff Attractive list of sites, with personal reviews of many products. Also contains an excellent guide to collecting Serenity autographs.

My little list of favorite Firefly stores and products

Sihnon Prints If you’re looking for Firefly/Serenity art, Mike Phillips is the best there is, and he just started selling signed and numbered limited-edition prints. His Mal art is to die for.

Out to the Black The designer of the “browncoats” T-shirt that was available through the late lamented Universal browncoats board, and she’s producing and selling it herself now. She also sells a sweatshirt in the same shiny design, messenger bags, backpacks, other shirts….good stuff! The wait time can be a little long on her stuff, but it’s well worth it and she’s very reliable.

Custom Aluminum Signs. Extraordinarily high-quality aluminum road signs with Firefly and Serenity themes. He has existing designs or will custom-design one for you. I had him make me a custom sign for my bedroom door that says “I’ll be in my bunk” and has Mal and Serenity on it, and I can’t recommend him highly enough. His prices are very low for the quality – these are heavy-duty metal with highway-sign reflective backing. No website yet, but you can email mikejr13@cox.net and he’ll set you up.

Done The Impossible A very professionally done fan-made documentary about the fans of Firefly and Serenity, hosted by Adam Baldwin (“Jayne Cobb”). Says Orson Scott Card of the film, “Think of it as a freelance “special features” DVD and you’ll recognize it as one of the best ever created. Think of it as National Geographic doing a special on one of America’s most fascinating tribes, and it’ll be even better.” It’s fun and inspiring to watch and well worth the purchase. Here’s a review by scifi.com.

Artcat’s Decals Car window decals of the ship as well as the Blue Sun logo. She has at least two people ripping off her designs and selling them, so do her a favor and support the original artist.

Monkeyshines Beadery Kaylee and Inara necklace replicas as well as more Firefly-inspired jewelry. She has a wonderful replica of the necklace Kaylee wears in the movie.

Wash-o-Saurus Browncoat silicone bracelets (black and brown) and juggling goslings! I have two of the bracelets, and they are really nice; I love them even though I’m not into the whole silicone bracelet fad.

Poplollies.com Official and unofficial merchandise. At this time (12/20/05), poplollies still has first printings of some of the Serenity comics available as well as copies of the sold-out Serenity movie magazine (being sold at cover price). Also trading cards, books, trade paperback, action figures, fan-created goodies, etc. I placed an order with them and received a lovely, quickly shipped package with all sorts of delightful extra stuff in it; my second order was similarly lovingly prepared. I reccomend them highly!

Blue Moon Stuff Firefly and Serenity-inspired t-shirt designs. Friendly seller with great customer service and quality, printed shirts. Keep an eye on the sale page!

The Prop Store of London This outfit purchased the majority of the props and costumes used in the film Serenity and will be selling them through their website. Expensive shiny stuff!

Authentic Browncoat Replicas You can order a replica of Mal’s signature browncoat from the Hollywood maker who produced the browncoats for the Firefly series. Depending on the type of leather used and custom sizing, they range in price from $600 to $1,300.

Fan Done Blue silicone “Can’t take the sky” wristbands, Serenity temporary tattoos, black market beagles, Serenity Christmas ornaments, trading cards, charms, and stickers.

Jason Palmer’s Artwork Firefly and Serenity limited edition art prints.

On The Drift – Music Inspired by Firefly and Serenity The Bedlam Bards perform music inspired by Firefly and Serenity. My favorites on the CD are the Wash song “Leaf on the Wind” and Brandon Klassen’s “Sail the Sky.” The Bard’s songs have a lively sense of humor and reflect their love of Firefly.

11th Hour Art Some of the most artistic and beautiful Serenity shirt and trinket designs you’ll ever lay eyes on, by the tireless Firefly/Serenity promoter and browncoat known as 11th Hour.

Black Market Beagles By beloved browncoat Adam Levermore-Rich, QMX artist and one of the primary organizers of the Browncoat Backup Bash, AKA B3 comes a cafepress site with some timeless designs. One of my personal favorites, presented in cooperation with Serenity graphic artist Goeff Mandel, is the Mandel and Earls shipbuilder’s t-shirt.

Firefly Cargo Bay A CafePress store containing a broad selection of shirts and other items inspired by Firefly and Serenity.

Crybaby mug Best. Mug. Ever. Oh, and other cool designs too.

Cool eBay Sellers

Here are a few people who (as far as I know) only sell their shiny stuff on eBay.

jubalev Authentic Nathan Fillion autographed items; lithographs, posters, prop money, DVDs.

absenthero Etched Firefly /Serenity shot glasses.

supercute1 Firefly art prints…..nice artwork of each character.
