Dream Sequence, Chapter 10

without comments

Zoe and River reached the arena wall and stared down, looking for a path that would lead them into the vast carpeted field. There was none. The only entrance appeared to be the one that was now buried under Simon’s handiwork, a few tons of smoldering steel and concrete obstructing their path.

Zoe eyed the ten-foot drop into the arena and decided it was the only valid option. She climbed over the safety railing and let herself drop, landing on her side with a thud, her face inches from a bloodied body lying limply on the ground with an arrow through its neck. That’s a cheering sight, she thought sarcastically, scrambling to her feet as River leapt into the arena, rolling lightly as she hit the ground and springing up in the same motion.

Dream Sequence, Chapter 9

without comments

The thunderous roar of the crowd seemed to fade into silence, leaving only the pounding beat of amplified music hammering at Mal’s dizzy and muddled senses. Every nerve and every muscle in his body seemed to be shaking from pain and exhaustion, but he felt his limbs go heavy, cold. He gasped for breath, confused. The pill Inara had given him had relaxed him, dulled his senses, dulled the pain, but this was new. Was he just hallucinating now? Was this the drug, or had his mind just given up trying to cope, and invented its own reality?

Dream Sequence, Chapter 8

without comments

“River!” Zoe hissed. Seeing the girl continue to tremble and cry on the floor, she took a deep breath and slapped her firmly. River gasped as her eyes flew open, and Zoe laid a hand on her back, the apology written in her eyes. “Little one, you are scaring me beyond all belief. We don’t have time for this, and they don’t have time for this. Dong ma?”

River nodded, getting to her feet with quiet grace and leading out wordlessly. Zoe followed, uncomfortable with the whole notion of following the still misty-eyed River. Nonetheless, her instincts told her that the calm certainty in River’s stride was informed by something she would do well to heed.

Dream Sequence, Chapter 7

without comments

Zoe and River made their way silently and rapidly through the darkened concrete stairwells and utility tunnels of the stadium, heavily armed, searching for the main ventilation access panel and hoping to avoid any wandering security and maintenance personnel. The unused areas of the massive coliseum felt strangely peaceful.

Zoe checked the tiny communicator in her ear for the ninth time, all too aware of the million things that could go wrong with their shaky rescue plan. She noticed she could no longer hear River’s footsteps behind her, and turned. River was standing with her body pressed against a huge metal panel in the wall of the arena, her hands exploring it as though it was an animate object.

Dream Sequence, Chapter 6

without comments

Kaylee eased Serenity into the air about thirty minutes after Simon, Zoe, and River had left in the shuttle. She’d wanted to leave sooner, but it had taken her shaking fingers a long time to wire the makeshift remotes to control the belly doors and the lift.

She was holding the yoke so hard her hands hurt, and though she willed herself to relax, she couldn’t ease her grip for more than a few seconds. She flinched as Inara’s voice cut into her concentration, and the ship lurched sickeningly to the side as she overcorrected. She hit the button to respond.

Dream Sequence, Chapter 5

It seemed to Inara that it had taken an eternity to fly to the coliseum and gain an audience with the Master of Ceremonies. A registered Companion tended to gain notice and respect, but the man was having a busy night. Inara had disciplined herself not to look into the arena until the last possible second, for fear of her emotions betraying her. That one reluctant glance had told her what she most urgently needed to know; Mal was alive.

Dream Sequence, Chapter 4

without comments

Mal, Wash, and Jayne were being held together in a tiny underground concrete cell in the base of the coleseum. Overhead, they could hear the pounding of feet as a massive audience was taking their seats, and the dull wave of noise coming from every direction spoke to the enourmous size of the building they were confined beneath.

Dream Sequence, Chapter 3

without comments

Zoe punched up the local news on the cortex to help curb her restless wandering of the ship. A chill ran down her spine a few minutes later when the announcer covering the impending gladiatorial games of the night began “This trio actually had the nerve to attempt a multi-million-credit robbery – on the very night of the games.

The camera switched to a shot of a handcuffed Jayne, kicking viciously at the cameraman despite the efforts of the two men restraining him. In the background of the shot she saw Wash and Mal, standing motionless against a green-painted wall, their hands cuffed uncomfortably above their heads.

Dream Sequence, Chapter 2

Mal stood on a bustling city street with Jayne and Wash, watching the shuttle dissapear in the distance. He pulled out a sheaf of papers, handing sets to Wash and Jayne. They took the ID badges accompanying them and clipped them to their jumpsuits before walking into a large hangar with “Veritas Armoured Transport” emblazoned in red letters over the entrance.

“How’s things shaping up, Wash?” asked Mal, appearing behind him on the bridge and looking out at the approaching planet.

Wash looked back at Mal with a satisfied gleam in his eyes. “Looks like a lovely day for crime.”
